Check valve (also called a non-return valve) is an automatic valve designed to control the direction of fluid flow in pipelines, allowing media to pass in one direction while preventing back flow. It operates without external power: the pressure of the flowing medium itself opens the valve, and reverse pressure (or gravity, in some designs) closes it, protecting downstream equipment (e.g., pumps, compressors) from water hammer, damage, or operational inefficiencies caused by reversed flow.
